Protect the expression
Copyright can protect original expression such as writing, artwork, music and software code. It does not protect a bare idea as such. The distinction matters: a concept for an app and the code, illustrations and copy created for it are different things.
Keep a reliable creation record
In India, acquisition of copyright is generally automatic for qualifying works; registration is not a prerequisite to acquiring it. Registration records can have evidentiary value. Keep dated drafts, source files, publication records and agreements rather than relying only on a final exported file.
Check ownership before reuse
Do not assume that paying an invoice answers every ownership question. Identify the creator, the contractual terms and any third-party materials involved. If a licence is used, check what uses it permits and whether limits apply to territory, duration, modifications or onward distribution.
An example: a commissioned website
A fictional studio delivers a website with custom illustrations, a stock photograph and an open-source font. Those assets may have different terms. The client should retain the design agreement and a list of external assets with their licences. That record makes a later redesign or transfer far easier to assess.
Make a simple rights folder
For each important asset, record its creator, date, source files, agreement and licence evidence. Flag anything with missing permission. Before sending a takedown demand or reusing someone else’s work, get advice on the facts and any applicable exceptions.
